As of May 7, 2026, Google has officially stopped showing FAQ rich results in search results around the world. This means that the dropdown questions and answers that used to appear below search listings are no longer available.
What Happened and What It Means for Your Website
Timeline of Changes: Google is making this change in three steps to give website owners and SEO teams time to adjust:
May 7, 2026: FAQ rich results disappeared from Google Search. This includes high-authority sites, like government and health organisations, which previously still had them.
June 2026: Google will remove the tools that help you check for FAQ results and how well they perform in their Search Console platform. This will also include a tool called the Rich Results Test, which won’t support FAQ coding anymore.
August 2026: The Search Console API will completely stop supporting FAQ rich result data.
Why Did Google Make This Change?
Google has not given a single, clear reason, but there are three main factors involved:
Search Result Space: FAQ snippets took up a lot of space on the page, which pushed other important links down, making them harder to see.
SEO Tricks: Some websites were using FAQ coding just to take up more space in search results, often with low-quality or repetitive information that didn’t really help users.
Switch to AI: With advances in AI technology, Google wants to summarise answers directly in search results instead of providing a list of questions and answers from one source.
